Maya is a Sanskrit word meaning the Devine power of creation and illusion. We live enveloped by illusion, in a state of ignorance about ourselves, whereby we fail to discriminate between the truth and falsehood and thereby loose our connection with the Supreme Devine. Islamic lusterware produced between the 9th and the 14th centuries forms the key visual element in almost all of Salma’s paintings. She uses vegetal patterns and designs, merges and melts them to recreate imagery in various lusters with pieces and bits of calligraphy.
